Brisbane 4WD Club K’Gari Cleanup 2025

Friday morning, we met at the BP Caboolture and headed to Rainbow, it was a LOVELY crisp morning where there are smiles all round looking forward to a relaxing and rewarding weekend ahead.

The barges were working overtime and even though, there was still a TWO HOUR WAIT TO GET TO THE BARGE from the road, a little banter, sunshine and having our feet in the sand helped pass the time pleasantly.

We DID make it to K’Gari, and after a few side quests, also made it to camp. :)

Our fearless Trip Leader registered club arrival to the organisers and we spent some time setting up, I believe that a dip in the water may even have rounded out the afternoon. A raucous group of scally wags met in the gated area for happy hour and thanks to Brenda’s patience we DID eventually agree that Chris would lead a drive to the west coast on Saturday to explore some of that side of the island.

Saturday morning arrived bright and sparkly as 16 cars headed towards Eurong for coffee and the Bakery then out the back towards the west coast. We found a couple of dingos hanging out on the road and some members of BNE 4WD Club were caught encouraging a howl or two… Through eucalyptus then into Javier where the landscape surprised us with almost deep rainforest areas of moss-covered trees, Bell birds and ferns for dayyyzzzzz. Past the black butt forest created in 1947, and through to Central Station.

Onto the other side of central the surrounding rainforest gives way to scrubby under growth and sandier soils. Past rocky Creek over Alligator Creek and (On the lookout ¿) into the swampy centres of the island.

Stopped at Ungowa looking towards the mainland where the pier was once in use, it still stands but whispers of times past and stories that the trees in all their glory recall long before we visited for the day.

A few wombat holes and a root or two wasn’t enough to stop us getting back to the water, and to another captivating view looking back to the mainland and a different aspect of the worn down jetty, nor is a knee high mud hole.

Off to Central for lunch for some food, ball throwing, a few laughs, but not before the great unbogging of ‘25 (our Pres) - however in true form he says, “it's wot ya do, go for a drive, hang out with friends, have some fun in your car, test it out and know you have the support to get out a sticky spot if needed.”

A wander along the boardwalk that the creek is so clear it’s hard to see that there is water there at all! aka as “'shit, I know it.. ' Creek.” (that’s its name yeah TAGS? :) )

(Wangalla Creek.. ))

A spectacular showing of elk and Staghorn specimens..

hen a split off of the crew where some vehicles ventured off to Lake Mackenzie for a swim (the younguns and Paz too) moved off to channel 12 and shenanigans, while others returned to camp for a bevy or two.  Or maybe a nap.

Saturday happy hour  - another great gathering where Brenda gave us the details we need for Sunday Clean-up...and EARLY START – on the beach for our annual photo, then off to our cleanup duties.

We were to start 11.2 klms south of DILLI village. Then 6k’s further south from that, our 16 vehicles this year split into 4 groups and really did a thorough clean-up of the beach, from the furthest distance to the closest, we cleaned up towards the next group where we met up, and then all moved to the thickest part of our designated area. Where Wendy, Ruth, Cheryl, Steve, Keiran was spending a crazy amount of time sifting through the pumice stone inlet.

Some of our finds of note for the day;

  • A complete light globe
  • 2 Snakes
  • Brendas Dummy
  • A more than naughty message in a bottle. :-

After returning to camp and then an afternoon dip at Eli Creek – the sun was still shining as we arrived at Cathedrals for thank you dinner celebrations. Apparently some of us had more fun than others?!?! Hmmm I don’t think so team. It was a totally subdued evening :) even though Ryan allegedly stole Danny's bowl ‘cause he was too cheap to buy his own dinner.

This wraps up another successful Clean-up event.

Thank you, Brenda, some serious time investment for it to be so seamless and fun for us all. We appreciate your efforts!! Xx

There is still an awful lot of erosion on the coastline. It’s very sobering to see just how much damage Cyclone Alfred has done and with Ngalar and above still closed on the Island we hope it recovers soon to its full beauty and uniqueness.

That is K’Gari.

That is, PERFECT BLISS

Will you join us there next year?
