Burger Run Nindigully Pub. 14-16 November 2025
On Friday November 14th 2025, a small group of 11 happy campers met a Blacksoil at 3pm to embark on a fun weekend drive led by Daryl and Katie. The plan was to head west and eventually end up at the Nindigully Hotel for an oversized burger!
We got through Toowoomba and were met by a stunning stormy cloud formation in the Hodgson Vale area. We became accidental storm chasers as we drove through some very heavy rain as the dark cloud closed in around us. Fortunately, it wasn’t a particularly wild storm, more just heavy rain and rumbling thunder and amazing clouds. It had almost cleared by the time we reached our Friday night stop in Leyburn.
A little residual rain hampered our setting up briefly, but it wasn’t long before we were all set up and heading to the Royal Hotel to be hosted by the lovely Chris and Ruth for a delicious dinner. A terrific night of fun, food and drinks was had and it was great to be able to spend some time catching up with Chris and Ruth and even be treated to a guided tour of the establishment.
The Royal Hotel in Leyburn is the oldest continually licenced premises in Queensland after James Murray became the first licensee in 1863. Unfortunately, he only held the licence for 6 months when he died of the effects of excess drinking!!
On Saturday morning we hit the road and continued west via Inglewood and Yelarbon and into Goondiwindi for lunch. After a bite to eat and a bit of a rest, we headed off to Nindigully via Toobeah and Talwood. We arrived at the iconic Nindigully Pub around 4pm and set up camp on the banks of the very brown but beautiful Moonie River. It was a very warm day and after we set up camp we enjoyed happy hour by the river as the temperature dropped, and the breeze picked up and cooled us all down at least a little.
For dinner we wandered over to the beautiful old pub and happily sat outside in the beer garden as another storm threatened to chase us inside. The dark stormy cloud went around us this time and we managed to stay outside and stay dry. A group decision was made to not order the mega sized burger and instead everyone ordered dinner of the standard menu, and the food was all delicious. We did get to witness a couple of other groups tackle the enormous burger and end up with a doggie bag large enough for their next 2 meals!
After dinner and several cold drinks, we headed back to our campsite for a few more coldies, some fun conversation and a few laughs. The 38 degree heat had sapped us all and we eventually headed to bed.
Sunday dawned and we packed up and hit the road to head back to Brisbane. We only got as far as Talwood when we stopped at a rest spot to do a quick repair on Anne and Kieran’s 7 pin caravan plug as their rear lights were coming on and off with the bumps in the road. What was supposed to be a short stop turned into a longer one when Lance and Karen snapped a fan belt as they went to take off. Fortunately, Lance was prepared enough to have a replacement belt which was fitted (after some blood sweat and tears) by the talented team of Lance and Danny while the rest of us helped supply tools, moral support, comic relief, soap and water and band aids!
Finally, we headed off again and made it into Millmerran for lunch in the park. The temperature was considerably cooler than the day before which made for a more comfortable stop.
Following lunch most of us headed back to Brisbane (with the exception of Daryl and Katie who enjoyed Millmerran so much they decided to stay another night).
It was a lovely relaxing weekend with a fabulous group of people and a great chance to explore and learn more about some great little Queensland towns and iconic pubs. Big thanks to Daryl for organising the trip and to Katie for her interesting facts and engaging commentary (as always) along the way.
