This trip was planned for some period of time and there was a lot of apprehension in the lead up to due to the continuous rains. Some people pulled out but not without good reason. Don't worry as there will be other trips down the track.
The 7 steeds with their brave crazy warriors that decided to go all met at CJ's Bakery in Woodford where coffees and breakfast all went down well. We talked about what to expect and what might be ahead. We talked about recovery procedures etc and all people had the right to refuse a hazardous situation.
At about 9.0am we all departed for the D'Aguilar National Park to see what we could find. The first plan was to 'air down' in the vicinity of Neurum Creek Bush Retreat but as that place seemed very busy we decided to move further into the forest area if we could find a road wide enough to park. No go so we went into Archer Camping area. Enough room but pouring with rain.
Aired down and proceeded. The highest white steed at the lead with various breeds following and the smaller black steed bringing up the rear.
We drove up Lovedays Rd enjoying the rain until we made a left turn into L.Traverse road. This joined up to Neurum Creek Rd where we made a right turn. The drive itself was comfortable at this stage except for the rain. We could have stopped at the Rocky Hole lookout but not viable as would have been saturated by the time we got back to the cars.
We found a road to the left for 4Wdriving. I turned only to find it gated. Backed out.
Onwards on Neurum Ck Rd we drove over a causeway crossing Neurum Creek itself. This had a good flow of water but very passable. We passed another track to the left but this had a sign, “Motor Bikes Only.” Passed the other end of the same track with the same sign. A bit of favouritism I feel. We don't stop bikes using 4WD tracks.
Eventually we arrived at the Gantry where we had a rest and talk. I explained that we would need to assess the new tracks as we get to them. Anyone not confident or dubious about driving must say NO. I did say that any tracks that I knew were difficult, we would not take.
After our break at the Gantry we headed off in the same formation as the earlier drive. We drove down Lovedays Rd until the first 'K' Break on the left. Using the Newtracs App. This is coloured green. K Break changes name several times to become Army Rd and Western Escarpment Rd, but the colour remains green. Generally in goodish condition and the drive was quite easy. Different tracks ran off it but most went into dead ends and showed difficult on Newtracs. We gave them a miss.
Our track then turned into a blue track which should have been slightly more difficult. If the person assessed the track in the weather we were having after about 6 weeks of rain, maybe a different colour.
Anyway we soldiered on as stupid brave warriors do. This blue track became a clay sliding track with deep ruts made by heavy vehicles, possibly military personnel carriers. The track also had deep bog holes full of water. Some holes could be driven through but some needed to be negotiated using steep side slopes. Each of these were heart stoppers. After managing a couple there was no turning back as the return would have been more hazardous. We continued on this blue track and came to what looked like a rock wall with water running past it. The approach to the water was also rock. With a closer look it could be seen that with some rock hopping and a turn to the left there was a crossing onto another blue track. We came to another bog hole. The biggest and best complete with a steep side slope. Had to be done, yuk. I was worried about my pride and joy but I thought, if that Jimny falls in that hole we would never find it. We made it all OK.
From the original blue track it turned into A Break which was also blue on Newtracs. A Break in the wet is notorious by nature and I was getting a bit apprehensive until we came to a junction with a green track to the left. A discussion between us so we took it heading back to the Gantry. One person asked if we could stop for a toilet break at the Gantry. We all needed a toilet break after what we had just been through.
After a small break we proceeded to Peggs road onto Range road down to Dayboro. We aired up at the end of Range road. Some stopped for a refresher at Dayboro while others went their own ways.
